Recently the scmp had an article about some Chinese banker who committed massive Lehman Brothers type fraud and was thus executed. It just made me wish we did that in 2008 in the US lol
The western media often provides misinformation (hoping that no one will fact check them). Unfortunately, there are too many gullible people in the world… and not so inclined to do any research.
Could you comment on the conditions inside chinese jails,..when the two canadian Michaels were in jail the information we got here was of severe conditions: incommunicado, no reading glasses allowed, disrespect, bad food etc Also my impression is that they were actually held in the traditional practice of hostage taking where the persons were actually very well treated as long as the agreed conditions by the other party were respected. When they came back home we mostly heard about the ex”diplomat” Michael’s version (well I did because I had family contacts) corroborating the “nasty Chinese government “ version. Also, I visited China during the whole episode and I kept Asking the locals about Chinese jailing conditions to the point of asking to try and visit these guys.People bluntly told me not to even try as it meant big trouble. Your comments?
Without having ever been in a Chinese prison, I can't comment on these - as a foreigner, I'm almost certainly not allowed to go to a Chinese prison, unless I have a reason to visit an inmate - I'd suggest, like everything esle you read in your media, there might be a grain of truth, a lot of speculation and a heap of misinformation
I do know people have written books after being in foreign prisons and China is no exception - the fact of the matter is, if life in prison was breezy, they'd have nothing to tell their readers and the books would be very boring indeed
If not getting my reading glasses was the worst of it, I'd say I'd gotten off lightly - the reality is, don't commit crime and you won't do time - the Two Micheals were spies, that much is now 100% certain and admitted by Canadian courts, not Chinese and, had Meng not been arrested for a "trumped" up charge, on behalf of a tin pot dictatorship, it's likey that the two michaels would have been quietly deported as many others have been rather than imprisoned - it's simply a case of fool around and find out.
By the way, I have literally a hundred Canadian friends in China, not one of them has ever been in trouble with the Chinese authorities, the only two people I do know who have been in serious trouble in China were an Australian, who was (and still is) a rowdy drunk, he was arrested several times at nightclubs, once in a hospital, he was never charged but after his last arrrest was deported as a trouble make - he's back in Australia now and has, as far as I know been arrested and charged twice in Austral, the other was an Israeli, who was caught in a drug sting, he was deported but allowed to remain in China, not in prison but under local police supervision until his two children finished their school year - he returned to New York and I don't know where he is now.
I know of many others but these are the only two I know peronally.
When Meng Wen Zhou was arrested, I really don't care if the two michaels were a retaliation, they were spies and they were fair game - they knew the risks, or at least they ought to have done. That China was able to do so with such skill and accuracy should worry the CIA, MI6 and other intelligence orgs currently operating in China.
I honestly don't see why a foreigner coming to China would even bother or want to try and find out what prison conditions are like - do you know what conditions are like in your own country and are you an advocate for change there? If not, then why would you be an advocate for change in China?
I believe China’s justice system is swift and appears to punish the guilty in a way that effectively deters crime. However, I do think the government should be more transparent, particularly when it comes to releasing information about death row inmates—especially foreigners.
I’ve been following the case of Shadeed Abdulmateen, the American who raped and murdered a young Chinese woman in Ningbo. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in April 2022. Since then, there’s been no official update, no confirmation of whether the sentence has been carried out or not.
Maybe he’s been executed, maybe not. But I believe confirmation of the outcome would provide a sense of closure—for the victim’s family, and for those who have followed the case.
Good point, I can't argue with that, he was sentenced to death, I don't think he had a suspension on it and therefore I suspect it's been done, but the family would know, the ghouls would not - I suspect that's what ahappened and it's approriate, if he wasn't executed, then we'll probably hear in the future, about 11 years time that he's been released and deported
In his case, he was sentenced in June, the appeal was heard inAugust and I am pretty sure he would have been executed a few weeks later

I believe I know the story and he was sentenced to death with a two year reprieve - if it's the same story, he won't be executed

Agreed, which is why social media is important - I'm very happy to be fact checked
